English language requirements
If English is not your first language you must provide evidence that your written and spoken English is at a level that will enable you to follow your chosen programme of study. English language requirements do vary according to programme and you should check the minimum requirements with the relevant admissions office prior to application.
We ask that all our applicants are proficient in English at a level that allows you to follow your chosen programme of study. We accept several qualifications including:
- IELTS: minimum grade 6-6.5
- TOEFL: minimum 550 paper-based/213 computer-based
- GCSE: Minimum grade C
- Cambridge certificate of proficiency in English: minimum grade C.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
We welcome applications from students who are taking the International Baccalaureate. We require students to obtain the award of the Diploma. As with other qualifications, you must have an English qualification at the appropriate level. For IB candidates we require a minimum of Grade 5 at Standard Level in English.
For information relating to required subjects for entry, you can find this at the beginning of each of the subject entries. Where we stipulate passes at SQA Higher in particular subjects, we would normally need you to have studied this to the specified grade at Higher Level in the IB.
College of Humanities & Social Science
- Minimum score of 34 points overall
- To include a minimum of 555 in Higher Level (HL) subjects with subject requirements as specified in the entry-requirement section for each subject area
- Where Maths is required at Standard Grade 1 or 2, IB candidates must have Maths Standard Level (SL) at Grade 5 minimum, Maths Studies is not normally accepted
- The exception to this is programmes in Education which require 32 points overall
College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine
Medicine (A100 five-year degree)
- Minimum score of 37 points overall
- To include 667 at HL in Chemistry and preferably two other science subjects
- Alternatively if three sciences cannot be taken at HL, we would consider applicants with Chemistry and one other science subject (preferably Biology)
- You must also provide evidence of a qualification at minimum Standard Grade 2 or GCSE Grade B or equivalent in Biology, Maths and English, if these subjects do not form part of your IB Diploma
Medicine (A104 six-year degree)
- If you are not studying the combination of subjects required for the five-year degree we may consider you for the six-year programme
BSc Medical Science (B100)
- Minimum score of 30 points overall, excluding bonus points
- To include Grade 5 at HL in any required subjects
- Normally a minimum of 55 at HL but this may vary according to subject
- Direct entry to second year available to those achieving 36 points overall and grade 6 in required subjects
Veterinary Medicine
- Minimum score of 36 points overall
- To include 666 at HL with Biology, Chemistry and either Maths or Physics
- Where three Sciences cannot be offered at HL we would consider 666 at HL with Biology, Chemistry and a non-science subject plus 6 at SL Maths or Physics
College of Science & Engineering
- Minimum score of 30 points overall, excluding bonus points
- To include Grade 5 at HL in any required subjects
- Normally a minimum of 55 at HL but this may vary according to subject
- Direct entry to second year available to those achieving 36 points overall and grade 6 in required subjects
GCE A Levels
College of Humanities & Social Science
- Minimum Grades BBB.
- Any additional subject specific requirements.
