Northumbria University is located
in Newcastle, in Northern England. Northumbria University
is one of the largest Universities in the
country offering over 400 study programmes to over 21,000
students. The city campus is located in the major city centre site in the heart
of Newcastle.
The University offers high quality of teaching. In
recent years the Higher Education Funding Council for
England has audited a wide range of subjects and to
date, no subject area assessed at Northumbria has received
less than a Satisfactory award. The Sunday Times also
listed Northumbria as "Best New University"
for three consecutive years in 1998, 1999, 2000.
The Northumbria University is truly cosmopolitan
with students studying here from all over the world.
More than 1000 students from over 60 countries outside
Europe have chosen to study at the University, as well
as a similar number from countries within the European
Union. The University is not only concerned with the
academic development of the student, and encourages
international students to play an active role socially
as well. There is a full range of multicultural and
multilingual activities and social events, organised
by fellow students. The University’s International
Office does its best to reduce common problems faced
by international students and help individual students
with personal worries, by assisting students with accommodation,
religion observance, and providing counseling services
when necessary.

Student
Services
Northumbria University provides for students'
sporting and leisure interests: there are over 100 sports
clubs with superb facilities. The Students' Union facilities
include shops, lounges, television rooms and societies
- social, sports and general interest. The student welfare
officer is available for advice on financial and welfare
rights, and the university's campuses have Health Centres
staffed by State Registered Nurses, who will treat minor
ailments free of charge and also advise about doctors
and other medical services. Additional student support
is provided by Student Services.
A major University-wide resource is the Computer Unit,
which provides teaching laboratories equipped with interactive
terminals and networked microcomputers. All sections
of the University can use those units for data entry,
programming, demonstrations, advice and assistance.
Student Employment Office
Tempo opened in September 1996 in response to increasing
student hardship, and provides a central point of contact
for students seeking paid employment during their time
at university. Tempo provides current students with
advice and information on paid part-time and temporary
employment that can be done alongside students’
studies.
