Established in 1920, Swansea University is a lively, research-based university. It has about 12,500 students and offers more than 500 undergraduate and 130 postgraduate courses in a wide range of subject specializations, from American Studies to Zoology.

The City of Swansea
Swansea University is based in the city of Swansea, and is roughly two miles from the city centre. Swansea is Wales' second largest city. Cardiff International Airport is merely one hour away from Swansea while the Bristol International Airport is about ninety minutes away. There is also a direct main line rail service from London Paddington to Swansea High Street Station. Swansea is less than three hours away from London by train, and an hour from Cardiff by car.
Swansea is a bustling city of 230,000 people. It brings together all the advantages of city life with the outdoor benefits of living by the sea. There is an array of pubs, clubs and bars to choose from on Swansea's famous Wind Street. All the main supermarkets, Tesco, Co-op, Lidl and Sainsbury, are also near Swansea University.
For leisure and entertainment, there is the Oceana, a 6 million pound leisure complex, and the LC2, which houses the Boardrider, the world's first deep water standing wave machine. Movie enthusiasts will also be delighted to know that Swansea has a 12 screen Vue cinema and the Odeon Cinema complex, which is also home to a ten-pin bowling alley.
Swansea has a beautiful coastal scenery. Close by is the Gower Peninsula, Britain's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Research-Led
90% of Swansea University's staff are research-active, according to RAE 2008. Swansea University is also first in Wales for research quality in Health Services Research, Biomedicine, General Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. Swansea University's engineers and researchers were part of the group that developed the Bloodhound that broke the World Land Speed Record. The Bloodhound can move faster than a bullet at 1,000 mph.

Good PC to Student Ratio
Roughly one PC is available for every six students. There are 450 PCs for student use at Swansea University's library. There are also laptops available for borrowing. The PCs can be used to type documents, email teaching staff, search through databases and to access thousands of electronic journal articles.
