    About The University

The University of Winchester is situated in Winchester, the historic capital of England elected by King Alfred the Great. The University of Winchester’s motto is “wisdom ond lar”, which means “wisdom and knowledge” in modern-day English. It was inspired by the foreword of King Alfred’s translation of Pope Gregory the Great’s Regula Pastoralis.

The City of Winchester

Winchester is a small, noteworthy city. It is situated in the middle of southern England, in the county of Hampshire. Famous for its place in history, Winchester is one of the most gorgeous cathedral cities in the United Kingdom.

There are many pubs and bars in Winchester that can provide anything from a conventional pint to a modern cocktail. Winchester also has a well-established cafe and restaurant culture, and has brought in icons such as Raymond Blanc and Hotel Du Vin.

The city of Winchester has a distinct legacy. It was the old capital of England, and was elected by King Alfred the Great as the seat of power for his kingdom of Wessex. Another renowned figure, William the Conqueror, paid the monks of Winchester to produce his infamous Domesday Book, which was put in Winchester Castle. Today, only the castle’s Great Hall is left and in it is a table suspected to be the Round Table of King Arthur. Winchester is also the burial location of the famed author Jane Austen, who is buried in Winchester Cathedral.

Winchester is less than one hour from London by train or car, and only 15 minutes from Southampton Airport.
