    About The Institute

The University of York is one of UK leading university with 11,000 students and has over 30 academic departments and research centres.

From its inception, the University has concentrated on strong viable departments and teaching and research of the highest quality. The quality of York's teaching has received many accolades. York and Cambridge top the teaching league with the highest scores in official teaching assessments.

York is also rated 6th out of 172 Higher Education institutions for research, with 18 of its 23 departments rated 5 or 5*. In the last Research Assessment Exercise, carried out by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 2001, York out performed all the large civic universities.

The main campus at Heslington is a 200-acre landscaped park, well known for its lake. Here the colleges and academic buildings are on a level site within walking distance of each other. Proximity to the historic city of York makes the University a popular choice and provides a pleasant working and residential environment.

The campus offers a wealth of facilities, with bars, shops, a sports center, tennis and squash courts, a health center, theatres and concert hall s all within easy walking distance.

The City of York

Life in York, historic city by day, buzzing hotspot by night, is varied, colourful and vibrant. A diverse range of shops, galleries, clubs, cafes, museums, music groups and sports clubs means that the city really does offer something for everyone. With a population of 180,000, York is big enough to feel cosmopolitan but small enough not to be overwhelming. It is a friendly place you can get to know quickly, but which still feels fresh and exciting years later

York was voted Europe's top international tourist destination in 2007, and its historic streets bustle with visitors from all around the world. There's plenty to impress: the famously soaring Gothic Minster, the winding medieval streets, the specialist stores and boutiques.
